Called for Such a Time as This—Celebrating the Courage of Queen Esther

Updated: May 8, 2025

Let us be women who remember that we don’t need a royal title to walk in kingdom authority. Like Esther, we are chosen, positioned, and placed with intention for such a time as this.

Some days, I feel like Mary and Martha at the same time, sitting at Jesus’ feet and yet striving to get things done. In quiet moments, when I let go of my checklist and the pressure to perform, I remember these profound truths: I am already held—not because of what I have done, but because of who God is. I am deeply loved. And I am called.

Esther knew something about being called—called to stand in a gap, to rise when everything in her said, “Not me. Not right now.” A Jewish girl turned queen of Persia, Esther didn’t pursue greatness. She pursued God and was positioned by divine providence. Even though fear could’ve easily paralyzed her, Esther stepped forward, choosing courage over comfort, and faith over fear.

Her story, tucked in the pages of the Old Testament, inspires me because it is one of bold obedience. When the Jewish people were threatened with annihilation, Esther’s cousin Mordecai challenged her with these words: “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, NIV).

Esther’s response didn’t come without trepidation. She asked her people to fast and pray. She prepared her heart before she approached the king, knowing it could cost her everything. And still, she said, “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16). Her faithfulness to fulfill the will of the Father was an act of surrender, a demonstration of trust, an example for all of us of what it looks like to walk in God’s purpose.

Queen Esther’s story encourages me to show up when it’s hard. To speak the truth even when it’s risky. To pray quietly and fight fiercely for my loved ones, and to seek first God’s Kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

As I reflect on her story, I think of the women in my life who have embodied this same quiet strength. My grandmother, who battled Parkinson's. A friend from church who praised God through her long cancer journey. Mentors who have boldly spoken truth over me. These women may not wear crowns, but they were, and are, called to lead in love and make an impact that will have a ripple effect for generations to come.

Let’s celebrate the Esthers in our lives—not only on special days, but in ordinary moments when their presence shifts the atmosphere and their prayers break chains. Their courage gives us permission to rise too—to be women who trust that God’s timing is perfect, even when we feel unprepared, and to confidently step forward in faith. Let us be women who remember that we don’t need a royal title to walk in kingdom authority. Like Esther, we are chosen, positioned, and placed with intention for such a time as this.

When we feel ill-equipped or the pressure feels overwhelming, may we remember we are not alone. Jesus goes with us, before us, and stands beside us. He strengthens us to advance when we don’t feel ready, and He gives us words when we don’t know what to say. Jesus reminds us that we are loved and cherished not for what we do, but because of who we belong to. We are His.

Who are the Esthers in your life who inspire you? Thank God for their witness, their wisdom, and their willingness to obey God’s call. Then, ask the Lord to give you that same holy courage to be obedient, lay down your fears, and step forward in faith—because you, too, have been called for such a time as this.
