But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped. —Psalm 63:11, ESV

I stood in the kitchen with my sister, discussing Christ's victory. She had just returned from a seminar focused on this topic, which we both found exciting as Christians. However, just two days later, I found myself overwhelmed by feelings of defeat, leaving me paralyzed by fear and anxiety.

How do you walk in victory when your head is spinning with defeat? That was the question I desperately asked God after my soul felt tangled in the grip of these strongholds.

I used to behave as though walking in victory was automatic, as if it came with a package deal for those who believe in Jesus and accept His victory through the cross. I thought I only had to declare victory aloud whenever I felt the shadows of doubt or defeated feelings. However, repeatedly, I found myself ensnared by the enemy's deceptions. Just as soon as I would boldly declare, “We have the victory, hooray!” I would struggle to escape a pit of swirling deception, feeling desperate for rescue.

Jesus has helped me rise from that pit time and again, and I am profoundly grateful. However, He does not intend us to live in a cycle of defeat. Jesus came to offer us a life of abundance, not scarcity.

As I wrestled with that question, a few days later, the Lord led me to Psalm 63:11. In it, David confidently proclaims victory over his enemies, despite their relentless pursuit of him. This resonated with me because I’ve noticed a pattern of defeat that follows me when I pursue areas God is leading me in, especially when they involve creative or vocational pursuits. Suddenly, I am stepping into wide open spaces of vulnerability.

Can you relate?

It is significant to understand that we have victory because Jesus has already won the battle for us, but embracing and living out that truth is essential.

David’s experience in the wilderness of Judah serves as a powerful example. In Psalm 63, the Lord revealed key themes like:

1. David humbly acknowledges God as his personal God.

2. He earnestly desires more of God.

3. He becomes satisfied simply by remembering God’s power and glory and meditating on Him.

4. He praises Him no matter his circumstances, even before God answers his prayers.

5. He clings to God as if His strength depends on it.

6. He proclaims victory not in word alone but fully believing and leaning into its truth. It is essential to note that David’s confidence in these trials did not happen automatically. David's various postures before the Lord were key to confidently proclaiming his victory.

I learned through this profound awakening that we must choose Christ’s abundance daily, rather than assuming or expecting it. That means we must walk through challenging circumstances, not around them. We must earnestly seek God in our wilderness and invite Him into that desolate space. We must face what makes us feel vulnerable and allow Jesus to walk us through it to the other side.

Friend, there is a disconnect in our faith when we bypass complicated feelings, emotions, and circumstances and run straight to masking these realities with the spiritual lingo we know but won’t allow to seep into our hearts and shift our realities.

Let David be the example of one who felt deeply, then turned his grief over to God, inviting Him into that space and allowing Him to renew his hope and confidence once again.

Have you, like me, desired to grow in your faith yet struggled to overcome those strongholds that hold you back from God's abundance for you?

This short chapter is chock-full of how David overcame, and you can, too. It starts with humbly turning to God. If this resonates with you, you can go deeper with “The Posture of Victory: Finding True Peace Amidst Our Everyday Battles” Bible study, available here on Amazon!

Today, will you ask the Lord what areas hold you back that you need to surrender to Him?
