A Matter of Eternal Life

Updated: Apr 14

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” —Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV)

When was the last time you shared the Gospel with someone? I mean, truly stepped out of your comfort zone—allowed yourself to get uncomfortable, yielded to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and asked the person God placed in your path, “Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?” Do you trust God to guide your words (Luke 12:12) as He uses you as a vessel to reach one of His lost sheep? Sheep desperately need the Shepherd.

A few Easters ago, a relative, despite a lifetime of church attendance, said they never realized until that day why we celebrated Easter. Their enlightenment overjoyed me because the Lord had unveiled for them the life-saving truth of the cross, tomb, and empty grave! Praise the Lord!

However, I also felt sad because they went so long, unaware of the redemption available through the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 1:7). For as often as we spoke, I had failed to share the love of Jesus with them. I needed to do better. I had never considered that a regular church attendee might not understand the full impact of Jesus humbly enduring immense suffering and death—that He did so to pave the way for us to live sin-free and spend eternity with our Father in Heaven. God used this celebratory moment to humble my heart and expand my view of the field He will harvest when Jesus returns.

As Christ’s followers, God sends us out to continue the ministry of Jesus’s disciples: Go out and spread the good news of our eternal salvation through Christ! Sometimes, this can awaken anxious feelings and some hesitation, but we can confidently step forward because God promises to be with us. Sharing the Gospel is a mandate for believers and crucial for humanity’s eternal life.

Are you ready to tell God you commit to working in His field? As you prepare your hearts this Holy Week, I invite you to reflect on the eternal significance of Jesus’s death and resurrection and His promise to return. Pray for God to place someone in your heart to share His love with. May sharing the Gospel become natural, without fear or hesitation. In humble obedience to our Father in Heaven, we love others by sharing His love for us.

Dear Jesus,

Your death saved my life, and I am so grateful. You ask us to share the good news with others so they may also know You and spend eternity with our Father in Heaven. With a humble and willing heart, I join the workers of your field that you will soon harvest, and I will proclaim the Gospel to whomever You request. Please give me the courage to be bold and the words to speak. In Your Holy Name, I pray, Amen.
