How Grace Strengthens Your Character for the Greatest Story Ever Written

The tension of life’s brokenness shapes our reality, but God has written redemption into the story and will fulfill the longings of our aching hearts. We also play a part in this.

A writer told me that a good story is about people coming together, breaking apart, and reconciling. I love novels that embody this redemptive theme. They draw me to the brink of despair as I feel the beloved protagonist approaching a point of no return. Yet, the author pulls off an unexpected reconciliation in the end. Oh, sweet grace, the despair fades, and my heart sings the praises of hope’s redemption.

So, if every captivating narrative has a crisis, so does humanity’s story. God designed us for a relationship with Him, but sin broke that relationship, and the redemption climax reconciles us to God again. This is the greatest story ever, where God’s tender, loving grace will fulfill every longing and desire. As we move from these big-picture themes, let’s consider how they play out in the details of our daily lives.

This Present Chapter

But what about our current pain and suffering, the love we crave (whether it hasn’t arrived or we are desperate for it to return), and this enduring in-between state we live in? Where do we set our ever-shifting hope?

When we encounter loss, disappointment, and deferred hope, 1 Peter 1:13 (NIV) reminds us of our firm foundation. “Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.”

Life is fragile, and we don’t know when we will die. However, we can accept that moment will come and find solace in knowing grace will usher us through. It’s like the story’s epilogue—the happily ever after.

When we set our hope on grace, we exchange the uncertain hope of this world for the steady hope of eternity. Everlasting life is what we look forward to with readiness and expectation.

Trusting the Author

The tension of life’s brokenness shapes our reality, but God has written redemption into the story and will fulfill the longings of our aching hearts. We also play a part in this. We can snatch the pen and ride our floundering hopes to the dismal end, or we can surrender the pen to God, setting our hope on His grace and trusting the Author with the storyline. Dear sister, God’s grace is not only sufficient for yesterday and today; His grace is sufficient for tomorrow!

When life feels fragile and hope deferred, set your hope on the grace that will come when Jesus returns.

The story isn’t over. You fight for a reason, and even in the messy muck, you have purpose right where you are. God’s love and grace alone empower you. Let His light shine through you to pierce the darkness. Whatever you are facing now, consider how setting your hope on grace strengthens your character for the greatest story ever written.

Does your hope feel unsteady? Here are five reasons to set your hopes on grace.

1. Grace offers you a future (Jer. 29:11).

2. Grace reconciles your deepest longing (2 Cor. 5:18).

3. Grace is sufficient for you (2 Cor. 12:9).

4. Grace is everlasting (John 3:16).

5. Grace is a sure foundation (Isaiah 26:16).
