Let the Old Season Fall Away
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
I love watching the seasons change. There’s something beautiful about that slow transition between summer and fall. It doesn’t happen overnight. One day the trees are full and green. The next, you begin to notice a leaf here and there changing color. Before long, the landscape looks completely different.
God often works in your heart the same way. If you’re anything like me, you usually want instant transformation. You pray one prayer and really hope everything will look different by morning. But that’s not usually what actually happens. Instead, the Holy Spirit likes to work gently, quietly, and consistently, one layer at a time.
Have you ever noticed that trees don’t fight to keep last season’s leaves? They simply let them go when it’s time.
I wonder how often we hold onto things Jesus has already invited us to release: old disappointments, old labels, old fears, old ways of seeing yourself. Old expectations that no longer fit where He’s taking you.
Sometimes you carry them simply because they’ve become familiar. But here’s the beautiful truth of the gospel: under the New Covenant, your identity isn’t tied to your past. It isn’t tied to your mistakes OR your victories.
Your identity is rooted completely in Christ. Paul tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Notice the wording. Paul doesn’t say you’re becoming a new creation someday. He says you are one.
Because of Jesus’ finished work, your deepest identity has already been made new. The Father doesn’t relate to you according to who you used to be. He relates to you through the righteousness of His Son. How amazing and freeing is that!
It means you don’t have to keep dragging yesterday into today. You can let go, because Christ has already made you new.
Maybe that’s what renewal looks like this month: not trying harder or striving to become someone different. Maybe it’s about agreeing with what God already says is true.
Perhaps you’ve been carrying shame that Jesus already carried to the cross. Maybe you’ve been believing lies about yourself that heaven never spoke. Or you’ve been measuring yourself by last season instead of remembering that God delights in doing new things.
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing…” — Isaiah 43:18–19 (ESV)
That invitation still echoes today. Not because God ignores your story, but because He redeems it. As summer slowly gives way to fall, maybe it’s time to ask the Lord a simple question: “Father, what old leaf have I been trying to hold onto that You’re inviting me to release?”
His answer won’t come with condemnation. It will come with kindness, because that’s how our Father leads His children. And as you let go, you’ll discover something beautiful. The same hands asking you to release the old are already holding the new.

Prayer
Father, thank You that because of Jesus, I am a new creation. Help me release the things that no longer belong in this season of my life. Teach me to see myself the way You see me — not through my past, but through Christ. Thank You for continually renewing my heart and reminding me that Your mercies are new every morning. Amen.
